A World War II Fighter Pilot's Remarkable Tale of Survival
On 12 August 1940, during the Battle of Britain, in an engagement with Dornier Do 17s, Geoffrey Page was shot down into the English Channel, suffering severe burns. He spent much of the next 2 years in hospitals, undergoing plastic surgery, but recovered sufficiently to pursue an extremely distinguished war and post-war career.
This eloquently written and critically acclaimed autobiography, now appearing in paperback form, tells of his wartime exploits but also dwells on the mental effects of severe injuries to a pilot both during his hospital treatment, on his return to flying, and thereafter.
He was a founder member of The Guinea Pig Club - formed by badly burnt aircrew - and this is a fascinating account of the Club, of the courage and bravery of 'The Few', and of Geoffrey's later life and achievements.
NB: Originally published as Tale of a Guinea Pig; this is an amended, updated and revised edition.
Reviews
"Quite simply one of the best books I have ever read about the men who fought the war in the air. The few who became the many. It is funny, poignant, larky but always with the ring of appalling truth." The Daily Mail
"For sheer narrative power, it ranks with the best." Daily Telegraph
"Gripping reading...a remarkable tale of survival, but told with great candour and without a trace of self pity." British Aerospace News
