The Procedure for Submissions
Grub Street is one of the few publishers these
days who will accept unsolicited submissions from authors. Most publishers
now insist on submissions via agents. We believe as a small independent
publisher that it is right for us to be open to outside suggestions.
However as we are a small publishing company there are one or two points
you should consider when sending a book proposal.
Please familiarize yourself with the kinds of books we
publish. We ONLY publish books on cookery and military aviation history,
so please don’t send us your novels and your poetry.
Check out our web site for titles we have already
published; the chances are if we already have a book on the subject we
won't be looking for another.
If, after doing this research, you believe your manuscript might fit our
list, please send a letter to either John Davies for military projects or
Anne Dolamore for cookery. The letter may include any of the following: a
sample of your writing (preferably the opening of the book or in the case
of cookery some sample recipes and a list of contents) of no more than 10
pages, a brief synopsis and biographical information about the author.
Send an SAE as well.
Please, do not:
-
submit a proposal by email (they will be deleted
because of risk of virus)
-
send anything without a SAE (that includes adequate
postage)
-
send queries via fax or email (they will NOT be
answered)
-
call about the status of a submission unless we have
REQUESTED the manuscript and you have not heard from us for at least
three months
We have very little time to spend reading through
proposals, most of the time we are busy producing the books we are going
to publish, so don’t expect a response from us in less than three months
and don’t ring or write to ask if we have received your submission
We cannot be responsible for the return of unsolicited
manuscripts that do not follow these guidelines.
Otherwise send to Grub Street at 4 Rainham Close,
London SW11 6SS
